Case Analysis:
Group Project:
Situation: Your team is hired by the company.
You are expected to propose a competitive strategy that helps the
company beat its major rival.
Expected output of the project: You are expected to (1) identify one
key problem/issue the company in competing with its major rival.
(2) Try to justify why it is such an important issue (note: if you
set a wrong issue, you are sure to lose).
(3) To come up with an effective strategy and (4) clearly present why
your recommendations work. You need to analyze strengths and weaknesses of
the company as well as those of the rival.
How I would start the project:
1. Get basic information
of the company as well as competitors (e.g. Annual report, Fortune, Business
week, maybe 3 articles).
2. Read them carefully and get some idea about “what is going on in
this industry” “what are the problems” “what should they do.”
3. Discuss
with team-mates and share messages to be conveyed to the CEO.
Identify what type of additional information do you need to clarify
or justify the messages.
This is a stage to create a "map" of your analysis.
Without a map, you may lose yourself.
4. Collect
the additional information (consult with librarians).
5. Work
more and more.
